Genetics and techniques in support
of potato variety selection

Marker-assisted selection (MAS) for the creation of disease-resistant potato varieties

The potato is susceptible to a large number of pathogens, and varieties must respond to the need to reduce the use of phytosanitary products. Production also has to cope with the increasingly frequent and intense climatic hazards caused by global warming. The development of resistant varieties with all the characteristics required by users is therefore a major challenge for breeding.

Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) and genomic selection (quantitative traits) can help breeders meet this challenge by facilitating the identification of genotypes that carry genetic resistance.

Identification of potato varieties using molecular markers

Variety identification using microsatellite markers (SSR) is an important part of the system organised by the FN3PT/OP in conjunction with the official services to secure the seed potato production scheme. A kit comprising 8 markers backed up by a database (IdeAle) has been progressively developed since 2000.
